Why is #puertorico trending on Twitter?
In Sept 2017, #PuertoRico was glanced by by Hurricane Irma and then directly hit by Hurricane Maria as a CAT4 storm. The island, which has had a decaying infrastructure for years, lost all power. Puerto Ricans struggled in the ensuing days and weeks. President Donald Trump, who got middling marks for his response to hurricanes that hit Houston and Florida, was slow to react to the crisis in Puerto Rico, focusing on attacking protesting NFL players instead. Then he attacked the Mayor of San Juan in a tweet storm that was largely condemned by the status quo.
What is Puerto Rico?
Puerto Rico is an island in the Caribbean Sea, which has been a territory of the United States since 1898, after the U.S. defeated Spain in the Spanish-American war. It’s considered an “unincorporated territory”. The island is controlled by the United States government, but is separate from the mainland.
